OTC Raises Money for
American Diabetes Association

The Ogeechee Technical College American Diabetes Association team held its 2nd annual Boston Butt fundraiser on August 30, 2007, raising a grand total of $1562.00 for the ADA.  The Boston Butt event, Ogeechee Tech’s largest fundraising effort, takes place the Thursday before Labor Day weekend.  Last year, the team sold 64 butts, raising almost $1000.00.  With that success in mind, the OTC team raised the bar and sold 96 butts this year.

The day before cooking, the team gets together in the Culinary Arts program kitchen to “rub some butts,” coating each piece of meat with oil and flavorful spices.  Early the next morning, Matthew Gainous, chair for the group, and Chad Taylor (husband to OTC employee Brandy Taylor) and his father, Mr. Wallace Taylor, begin the all-day process of smoking the butts.  The outcome is delicious.  Jamie Smith, an OTC employee, says “the Boston butt was W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L!!!!! It was one of the best we have ever had. Please let the ‘Smoke Masters’ know we thought it was delicious.”

The Ogeechee Tech ADA team would like to thank the following people for making this event a succulent success:  Penny and Wesley Hendrix for smoking butts the night before; Chad Taylor of Briggs and Stratton to join in the effort; Mr. Wallace Taylor for providing his grill and expertise; First Southern National Bank for providing a grill; Mr. David Edwards for providing a grill; and the faculty, staff, students, and community members who purchased butts.
