MRI Program at Ogeechee Tech
Receives Accreditation

Dr. Dawn Cartee, President of Ogeechee Technical College, announces the accreditation of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging program of the college by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).  This is the initial accreditation for Ogeechee Tech’s MRI program.  The period of accreditation is three years, which is the maximum duration that may be awarded by JRCERT.

According to JRCERT Chair, H. Martin Northup, M.D., FACR, the organization, which is located at 20 North Wacker Drive, Suite 2850 in Chicago, Illinois, is the only agency recognized by the U. S. Department of Education for the accreditation of educational programs in radiology, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance, and medical dosimetry.  Dr. Northup further stated, “Specialized accreditation awarded by the JRCERT offers institutions significant value by providing peer evaluation and by assuring the public of quality professional education in the radiologic sciences.”

In announcing the accreditation, Dr. Cartee stated, “We are very proud of our staff in the MRI program.  They have worked very hard to achieve this accreditation, and we are confident that their efforts and this accreditation will translate into even greater student success in this program.  Many of our medical programs must be accredited above and beyond the institutional accreditation which our college holds—providing even greater levels of evaluation and oversight which assure our students they are getting the best education possible in their respective areas of study.”

According to Ms. Lynda Tinker, MRI Program Director at Ogeechee Tech, this is the first year that JRCERT has accredited MRI programs, and Ogeechee Tech’s program is one of only three in the United States to have attempted accreditation to date.  In addition to Ms. Tinker, Ms. Erin Giddens, instructor in the MRI program, worked to achieve accreditation, as did others at the college.  “The level of accomplishment in our MRI program is admirable, and is consistent with the quality education provided by all of our medical programs,” stated Dr. Jessie Strickland, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Ogeechee Tech.  “We welcome the extra level of scrutiny that national accreditation brings, to help us achieve the highest levels of professional instruction possible.  It is certainly noteworthy that our MRI program is one of only three in the country to even attempt this accreditation,” Dr. Strickland concluded.
