OTC & GSU Collaborate to
Help Students Become Certified

For the past year, Terry Hand, CIS instructor at Ogeechee Technical College, has been meeting with Georgia Southern University faculty and directors in the IT/IS department, in hopes of working out a partnership between the two schools.  Starting in 2007, the arrangement was set for OTC to begin to offer certification training classes specifically designed for GSU students.  A primary focus of OTC is to provide students with hands on training and certification preparation.  A few select students from GSU have decided to seek such training in hopes of acquiring their first CIS certification letters.  This is the first time in OTC history that a CIS class was specifically designed for GSU students.

CIS 1140 (Network+) was scheduled to run for 15 weeks, following GSU’s time-table, meeting every Saturday from 10:00AM until 12:00PM, from January 2007 through April 2007.  The primary purpose of the course was to help GSU students get hands on training and preparation to take the Network+ certification from CompTIA, one of the foundation certificates in the field of CIS.  The class will officially end this Saturday, April 28, 2007, and 14 GSU students will attempt their first industry standard certification, Network+ soon after.

“It is my hope that GSU and OTC will continue this new-found partnership and help students from both schools reach their full potential”, stated Terry Hand.  Ogeechee Technical college has helped an average of 10-12 students per year achieve certifications over the past few years.  “We could see as many as 30 people receive certifications in 2007, and this could be a record for technical colleges in the state of Georgia; and I’m pretty excited about that”, concluded Hand.
