Statesboro High Hosts Ogeechee Tech Program Showcase

Ogeechee Technical College presented a Program Showcase to hundreds of Statesboro High School students recently.  Students were allowed to visit instructors from a variety of programs, such as Horticulture, Turf Grass, Wildlife & Plantation Management, Culinary Arts, Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management, Accounting, and Medical Assisting.  In addition, students had the opportunity to learn about Veterinary Tech, Funeral Service, Commercial Construction, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, Early Childhood Education & Care, Computer Aided Drafting, Automotive Technology, and Business Office Technology.  Representatives of OTC General Education/Learning Support and Student Affairs were also on hand to provide information to students.  The Program Showcase was sponsored by the Statesboro High School Georgia Career Student Association (GCSA), which is coordinated by SHS teacher Margot Bragg, the OTC Stay in School Project, coordinated by Jeanne Anne Marsh, and the Office of Academic Affairs at OTC and Vice President Dr. Jessie Strickland.

Ogeechee Tech routinely provides information to middle and high school students to help generate interest in pursuing a career path which will motivate the students to graduate from high school and continue their education after high school.  Duel enrollment options are also available for some high school students, in which graduation from an Ogeechee Tech program is possible by a student’s high school graduation.

Ogeechee Tech Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Jessie Strickland, was on hand for the Showcase and expressed her excitement at the success of the event when she stated, “This is fantastic to have so many students visiting with our instructors.  I think it is a very effective way to help young people learn that there are many different career options within their grasp.”  Dr. Martin Waters, principal of Statesboro High School stated, “Students need to be thinking about their future and have the opportunity to explore as many options as possible.  At Statesboro High School, we focus on the student and try to expose them to as many post-secondary options as we can so that they can identify the merit of the courses we offer here and the application to their future.”  Ogeechee Technical College and Statesboro High School already work very closely together to enhance high school students’ education and are currently discussing more ways to partner together to ensure the success of students.
