OTC Hosts SEARCH Camp Participants

Ogeechee Technical College recently hosted 19 high school students who were participating in SEARCH (Students Exploring and Researching Careers in Health).  The group was comprised of sophomores, juniors, and seniors from five counties, including Bulloch, Candler, Evans, Emanuel, and Screven.  SEARCH is organized each year by Magnolia Coastlands Area Health Education Center (MCAHEC) which is a Statesboro based non-profit organization.  MCAHEC has partnered with the Upward Bound program on the Georgia Southern University campus to assist students through tutoring, cultural enrichment, and through personal career and academic counseling.  The SEARCH camp helps provide information to high school students about various career options in health care.

Ogeechee Tech provided exposure to health care occupations such as Surgical Technology, Pharmacy Technology, Imaging Sciences, Medical Assisting, and Health Information Technology.  According to Ms. Bela Kundu, Health Careers Coordinator of MCAHEC, “The trip to OTC not only gave the students knowledge and confidence, and a certain sense of direction in their possible choice of careers, it also gave them an opportunity to learn about careers from practicing health care professionals.  Additionally, the OTC faculty made the learning experiences memorable and enjoyable for students through exciting (and often hands-on) activities.”  Students had the opportunity to get actual practical experience in a number of the health occupation areas.  “Providing hands-on training is a major part of what we do here at OTC.  This experience helps students get a valuable insight into what sort of career they might choose to pursue following graduation from high school,” commented Dr. Dawn Cartee, OTC president.

Ogeechee Tech has participated in SEARCH camp previously and has plans to continue to do so.  “We always welcome high school students to our campus,” stated Dr. Cartee.  “What better way to show someone how OTC can become a major part of their future education and success?” she concluded.  For more information on health occupation programs at OTC, or about any OTC program of study, call 912.681.5500 or visit www.ogeecheetech.edu.
