Ogeechee Tech Set to Assist
With Special Olympics

When Statesboro and Bulloch County play host to the Georgia Special Olympics Fall Games in 2008, Ogeechee Technical College will be a major player in providing assistance for the event.  With more than 1500 athletes and coaches, and many more family, friends, and other supporters crowding into Statesboro, an ‘all hands on deck’ mentality will prevail among many organizations within the Statesboro community.  Ogeechee Tech is set to be a major sponsor of the games, and will provide numerous volunteers to assist with the various events leading up to, and during, the Fall games.

A very prominent figure in the planning and support of the Special Olympics Fall games locally is Dr. Dawn Cartee, President of Ogeechee Technical College, who will partner with David Ball, local business leader and former OTC Board of Directors Chair, to lead the Finance Committee of the local event organizing group.  “What better way for anyone, and certainly Ogeechee Tech, to show support for our community and this special group of athletes than by strongly supporting this event,” commented Dr. Cartee.  “I am happy to commit my energy to this project.  In addition, Ogeechee Tech is always in the forefront of helping out in community projects, and this is just one more way we can provide a public service, while also helping our local community shine when so many visitors arrive,” Dr. Cartee further stated.

The 2008 Fall Games, which will be held October 3 through 5, will demand as many as 1000 volunteers to help the event succeed.  “We expect the employees and students of Ogeechee Tech to do their part in supporting the event—not because I want them to, but because that is the kind of people they all are—those who want to help others,” Dr. Cartee concluded.  Statesboro has been awarded the games in 2008, 2009, and 2010.  For additional information on the upcoming Special Olympic Fall games, read a related story in a recent Statesboro Herald edition at http://www.statesboroherald.com/news/article/5311/.
