In observance of National Dental Health Month, Ogeechee Technical College Dental Assisting students were invited to speak to area pre-K classes.  The students visited a total of nine schools and 16 classrooms over a two day period during the last week in February.  The schools visited include Brooklet Elementary, Langston Chapel Elementary, Mattie Lively Elementary, Nevils Elementary, Pittman Park Education Center (3 year-old class), Portal Elementary, Southeast Bulloch High School, Stilson Elementary, and Weaver's Play and Learn (Sylvania).  Each group of dental assisting students was responsible for planning its own presentation.  OTC students talked to the pre-K students about germ bugs (bacterial plaque), proper brushing habits, and which snacks are good or not-so-good.  Each child received and a new toothbrush and tooth paste which were donated by The Dental Assisting Club at Ogeechee Tech.

The visits worked to reinforce the curriculum of the Preventive Dentistry course the OTC students are now taking which teaches dental assisting students to educate and counsel patients in the areas of dental disease, oral hygiene, and nutrition.  The Dental Assisting program director, Yvonne Jenkins,  said that she was pleased by how hard her students had worked on their presentations.  “I think the Dental Assisting students were surprised by how much the children already knew.  I’m happy that we have the opportunity to go into the schools to reinforce what the teachers there are doing.  It is important that children start good dental health habits now for a lifetime of good oral health,” stated Jenkins.
