Former OTC Paramedic Student Visits Campus in Helicopter

Karen Grabenstein and Jessie Reaves are shown in front of Air Evac 91 on the Ogeechee Tech campus.
Former Ogeechee Technical College Paramedic Technology student, Jessie Reaves, recently flew onto campus aboard a medical helicopter. Now a flight medic with Air Evac 91, based in Vidalia, Georgia, Reaves received his Emergency Medical Technician training at Ogeechee Tech before completing his Paramedic training in 2006. Having worked at a number of ground-based Emergency Medical Services in Georgia, Reaves is excited to now be providing patient care in an aircraft. Reaves has completed quite a few advanced care programs since graduating from the Paramedic program, and said, “I have always had an interest in aero medical and advanced care. This job allows me to pursue both.”

Students crowd around the helicopter to ask questions.
Karen Grabenstein, EMS Programs Director at Ogeechee Tech, was on hand to greet her former student, as were other Ogeechee Tech faculty, staff, and students. The trip was not just to allow a former student to visit, but was actually a part of the training of current EMT and Paramedic students. “Our students never know when they may have to call on one of the aero medical services, and being familiar with the landing procedures, patient packaging techniques, and safety factors for dealing with a helicopter while it is on the ground, are important parts of their training,” stated Grabenstein.
